Spotted: Awesome Brewery Container Garden

container garden

A New York brewery and cafe is growing lots of its own of food in a discarded keg container garden.

The Brooklyn brewery Sixpoint Craft Ales features damaged kegs and reclaimed bathtubs full of edibles like eggplants, strawberries, leafy greens, corn, potatoes, and melons. But they go beyond growing their own. The brewery has a rainwater catchment setup and also keeps chickens.

Those big kegs are a great way for the folks at Sixpoint to grow some food without worrying about what's probably some serious soil contamination. Urban soil is often sullied with toxins like lead, and container gardening is handy if you want to grow food but are worried about your soil quality.

The folks at Sixpoint are all about quality beer, and their website goes into detail about their brewing process. What struck me was that they use a handmade crank for mashing their grains, which not only gives them more control over the mash's consistency but reduces their energy use as well.

Sixpoint's blog also hints at an upcoming project to help plant more trees in their little Brooklyn neighborhood. I'm really interested to see what this mystery Fall project will be!

Have you guys run across any breweries that are going green or interesting container gardens? Share away in the comments!
